Leslie's mother provided the background for her careers: a civic leader, Committee Chairwoman for the Republican Caucus, and managed Harold Levandor's campaign for governor, as well as being President of the Girl Scounts in the Midwest and serving on the Board of Governors for the Hebrew Union College. .
After Leslie graduated from the University of Minnesota, she headed for New York City, where she setup a charity called "Prisoner's Family Transportation and Assistance Fund" that was awarded a Volunteer Service Award by Vice President Gerald Ford in 1972. "Effective Fundraising is personal -- you have to know your donor's hobbies and friends, if they own their own home, their income and assets as well as their age, birthdate and number of children they have" she says, "because that knowledge can then be incorporated into a successful targeted mailing or telemarketing campaign."
